Shipping Cars from China to Kazakhstan & Central Asia: Cost & Transit Time Guide
Published · Last updated · CarSourceHub Editorial Team
For Kazakhstan, land transport wins on time. A truck or rail wagon through Khorgos or Alashankou delivers in about 7 to 15 days for roughly USD 1,800 to 3,500 per car, while the sea-and-Caspian route to Aktau takes 30 to 45 days. Choose sea only for bulk volumes or when border queues spike.
Two realistic routes, very different clocks
Central Asia is landlocked, so a car leaving China reaches Kazakhstan either overland through the Xinjiang border crossings, or by sea to the Caspian and then across the water to Aktau. The overland corridors — Khorgos (Horgos) and Alashankou (Dostyk on the Kazakh side) — carry the overwhelming majority of vehicle traffic because they are two to four times faster.
The sea route exists mainly for buyers consolidating large volumes from southern Chinese ports, or when land capacity is constrained. It is slower and involves more handling, but per-unit cost can fall on full-container or RoRo volumes.
Cost and transit comparison (2026)
| Route | Mode | Transit time | Cost per car (USD) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eastern China → Khorgos → Almaty | Truck car carrier | 7-12 days | 1,800-2,800 | 1-8 units, fastest delivery |
| Eastern China → Alashankou/Dostyk → Almaty | Rail container | 10-15 days | 2,200-3,500 | Containerised, weather-resilient |
| Chongqing/Xi'an → Dostyk → Nur-Sultan | Block train | 12-18 days | 2,000-3,200 | Regular volume programmes |
| Shanghai/Ningbo → Poti/Baku → Aktau | Sea + Caspian ferry | 30-45 days | 1,600-2,600 | Bulk consignments, cost-led buyers |
| Khorgos → Bishkek / Tashkent | Truck | 9-16 days | 2,000-3,200 | Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan onward delivery |
Ranges reflect freight quotations collected for 2026 shipments and exclude duty, VAT, the Kazakh utilisation fee and destination handling. Rates move with fuel, border queues and seasonal demand.
Land route: Khorgos and Alashankou
How it works
Vehicles are collected at the Chinese yard, cleared for export, then either loaded onto a car-carrier truck or stuffed into a 40ft container (two to four cars depending on model) for rail. At the border, Chinese export customs and Kazakh import customs process the consignment; the truck then continues to Almaty or transfers to a Kazakh carrier.
Where the time goes
- Inland leg to the border: 3-5 days from the Yangtze delta, 1-2 days from Urumqi.
- Border processing: 1-4 days normally, longer during holiday peaks and inspection campaigns.
- Onward delivery to Almaty: 1-2 days; to Astana or Shymkent, add 1-2 days.
- Registration in Kazakhstan after the utilisation fee and Euro 5 documentation are settled.
Sea route via Aktau
A Caspian routing typically sails from a southern Chinese port to Poti or Baku, then crosses to Aktau by ferry, or moves via Iranian transit where the buyer's compliance allows. Handling points multiply: two port calls, a ferry, and inland trucking. Damage risk and schedule variance are both higher than on land, and the Caspian ferry is sensitive to weather and to backlogs at Alat.
The economics only work when the vehicle value is low relative to freight, or when a whole RoRo parcel is booked. For one to five higher-value units, land transport is almost always the better decision.
Documents required
| Document | Issued by | When needed |
|---|---|---|

| Certificate of origin | CCPIT or customs | Before border arrival |
| CMR (road) or SMGS rail waybill | Carrier | At loading |
| Certificate of conformity (Euro 5) | Manufacturer / accredited body | For customs and registration |
| Pre-shipment inspection report | CCIC or agreed inspector | Where the buyer requires it |
| Utilisation fee receipt | Kazakh authority | Before registration |
Seasonal and practical notes
- December to February: snow and short daylight slow the mountain approaches; add 5-7 days of buffer.
- Nauryz (late March) and Chinese New Year both create multi-day border slowdowns — book earlier or later.
- Specify cold-climate preparation: winter-grade coolant, a healthy battery, and for EVs a heat-pump-equipped trim.
- Photograph every vehicle before loading and on arrival; open-truck transport collects road grit and stone chips.
- Confirm the consignee's EAEU importer status before shipping — customs will not release to an unregistered party.
We book both corridors weekly and can quote door-to-door to Almaty, Astana, Bishkek or Tashkent with the customs documents prepared in advance.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does it take to ship a car from China to Kazakhstan?
- By road or rail through the Khorgos or Alashankou crossings, 7 to 15 days door to door is normal, with border formalities the main variable. The maritime alternative — sea freight to a Caspian port and onward to Aktau — takes 30 to 45 days including transhipment.
- How much does it cost to transport one car from China to Almaty?
- Budget roughly USD 1,800 to 2,800 per unit for a car carrier truck from eastern China to Almaty in 2026, and USD 2,200 to 3,500 for containerised rail with inland delivery. Rates rise sharply in the weeks before Nauryz and in December when capacity tightens.
- What documents are needed at the Khorgos border?
- Export declaration and export licence from the Chinese side, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, CMR or rail waybill, the vehicle's certificate of conformity showing Euro 5, and the buyer's EAEU importer details. Kazakh customs will also assess the recycling/utilisation fee before registration.
- Is winter a problem for this route?
- It can be. From December to February, snow closures on the mountain approaches and reduced daylight slow truck convoys, and queue times at Khorgos lengthen. Add five to seven days of buffer, specify winter-grade coolant and battery, and avoid scheduling arrivals in the days around major holidays.
