Used Car Shipping and Customs Clearance at the Xinjiang–Kazakhstan Border

8/6/2026

Once a used car is bought in Xinjiang, the deal is won or lost in logistics. This is a practical breakdown of used car shipping from China to Kazakhstan overland, the customs clearance steps at Khorgos and Alashankou, and the errors that cost buyers weeks.

Three ways to move the vehicle Car carrier truck. Six to eight units per carrier, Urumqi to Almaty in three to five days including border time. Typical cost USD 700–1,200 per unit depending on season and fuel. The default choice for mixed batches. Rail container. Two to four cars per 40ft container from Urumqi or Alashankou. Slower door to door but better protected and often cheaper per unit on volume, around USD 550–900. Good for high-value or new energy vehicles. Drive-through on transit plates. Cheapest for a single car, but adds mileage, insurance exposure and driver visa complications. Only worth it for one-off purchases.

Customs clearance step by step 1. Export side: deregistration of the Chinese plate, export licence, customs declaration and inspection at Khorgos or Alashankou. 2. Border transfer: vehicles are handed to the Kazakh carrier under customs seal; the seal number must match the declaration exactly. 3. Import side: EAEU customs declaration, payment of duty, VAT and the recycling fee, then a technical certificate (SBKTS) and issue of the Kazakh registration. Skipping the SBKTS is the most frequent reason a cleared car cannot be registered — arrange the certification agent before the vehicle arrives.

Costs to budget beyond the car price Export paperwork and yard handling, inland trucking to the border, insurance at roughly 0.3–0.6% of value, customs duty per the EAEU tariff, 12% VAT, the recycling fee by engine size and age, the SBKTS technical certificate, and broker fees. On a USD 12,000 used SUV, a realistic all-in landed cost in Almaty lands between USD 16,500 and USD 18,500.

Seasonal factors Winter weather over the Tianshan passes and holiday closures around Chinese New Year and Nauryz can each add three to seven days. Plan orders that must arrive before spring selling season to depart Xinjiang no later than early February.

Five mistakes to avoid Paying the full amount before export documents exist. Accepting photos instead of a VIN-matched video. Ignoring emission standard rules for the destination. Underestimating the recycling fee on large-engine vehicles. Using a broker who is not registered for EAEU declarations.

CarSourceHub arranges verified stock, export documentation, sealed transport to Khorgos and clearance partners in Kazakhstan, with staged payments so funds are released only against real shipping documents.
